Providing Access to Computing Resources that Empower People with
Disabilities
The ACRC provides assistive computing services to help support
students, faculty, and staff with disabilities. The ACRC works
closely with the many departments on the CSUSB campus to promote
awareness and provide recommendations on appropriate assistive
computing accommodations.
The ACRC evaluates individual computing needs and makes assistive
and standard computing equipment recommendations that will work
to accommodate a disability. The ACRC focuses on technologies
that integrate the user into their work environment.
The ACRC researches the latest assistive technologies and provides
training and support on technologies that help increase access
to computing for people with disabilities. One-on-one training
on the many technologies is provided in our training lab in room
1108C Pfau Library.
The ACRC supports assistive workstations in the general-access
student computing labs that help people with disabilities complete
their work requirements.
The following list includes some of the assistive computing technology
provided:
- Large
monitors
- Screen
enlargement software
- Speech
output software
- Scanners
- Trackballs
- Speech
recognition software
- Alternative
keyboards
- Adjustable

- Software

Assistive workstations
are available in the general computer labs PL-1104, 1105 and 1109,
JB-123 and on the CVC campus. A mobile assistive workstation is
also available for use in other computer labs on campus.
The ACRC works with the Services to Students with Disabilities
Office in providing textbooks and other media in accessible formats.
Media can be converted to Braille, large print, and electronic
text.
Internet web sites can be inaccessible for people with disabilities.
This shuts the door on information for people who can most benefit
from the capabilities of the Internet.
Web sites can be made more accessible for people with disabilities
using assistive technologies. The ACRC provides web page evaluations,
which include recommendations on improving the accessibility of
the site.
