Assistive Computing Technician

ACM Service Area Name: Assistive Computing Resource Center (ACRC)

Job Position Name: Assistive Computing Technician

Wage Ranges: $8.00 - $8.50 per hour

ACM Service Area Overview:

The ACRC provides services that empower people with disabilities through access to computing resources. These services help bridge the gap between an individual's needs and available technology. ACRC also provides individualized support and assistance to persons with disabilities, facilitating access to standard computing environments. ACRC maintains assistive workstations in PL-1104, PL-1105, PL-1109, PL-014, JB-123, as well as on the Palm Desert Campus. Lastly, ACRC provides the latest in assistive technology information for the CSUSB campus.

Qualifications:

Assistive Computing Resource Center candidates will have the following experience, skills, interests, and abilities:

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to the needs of people with disabilities
  • Good organizational skills
  • Proficiency with, or the ability to learn Assistive Technology (i.e. software and hardware that assist individuals with disabilities)
  • Proficiency with desktop publishing, printing, scanning, and other forms of media conversion
  • Proficiency with troubleshooting within computer systems
  • Have an understanding of the policies of STP, its purpose, and goals
Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a list of responsibilities of the ACRC assistant:

  • Provide individualized training on assistive and standard technologies
  • Provide individualized support and assistance for ACRC supported software
  • Develop and maintain end-user support documentation, outreach materials (including the ACRC newsletter), and instructional material
  • Maintain Assistive computer lab machines
  • Install software and hardware on workstations
  • Complete Braille print jobs and other media conversion jobs
  • Troubleshoot problems with the assistive technology and refer problems that cannot be solved to the Program Coordinator
  • Maintain cleanliness of the training lab facility, including the ACRC Assistant desk
  • Facilitate contacts for Program Director (i.e. Meeting Maker, etc.) and maintain ACRC contact information in a database
  • Keep a friendly and helpful attitude toward clients and toward each other
  • Maintain a professional attitude while on duty
  • Answer phone calls and take messages for ACRC staff
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties that support the ACRC
Reports to:

STP Area Supervisor and ACM ACRC Coordinator.

Evaluation:

Performance evaluation is done by the STP Specific Area Supervisor in conjunction with Area Staff.

Career Path:

After a period of service, the ACRC Assistant is eligible to move laterally into other STP positions; these moves could include supervisor, highly-technical or managerial positions.
